Vehicle Traffic At Ercan Airport ‘Arrivals’ Is Being Regulated

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality rolled up their sleeves to regulate the vehicle traffic in front of the “Arrivals” section of Ercan Airport.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Enver Öztürk and Mayor of Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality Ali Karavezirler met at Ercan Airport today 18^th November 2024 to detail the cooperation to be made on traffic regulation and to make on-site inspections.

Mustafa Sofi, Director of the Civil Aviation Department of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Oğuz Akçay, Director of the Planning and Construction Department, and Kazım Kafaoğlu, Director of the Highways Department, were also present during the inspection.

Speaking to the press after the inspection, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Öztürk stated that they will act together with Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality for the arrangement and that a relief will be seen in the said section in a short time.

Undersecretary Öztürk stated that the new terminal was opened last July and said, “We received some criticism at this opening, but we envisaged that it would be opened by ensuring passenger and flight safety by meeting with experts and that the deficiencies would be completed over time. In the past year, today, the new terminal building and runway of Ercan Airport have become operational with all their functions.”

“THERE HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS”

Stating that there has been a “very serious” increase in the number of passengers with the opening of the new terminal building and runway, and that there are data indicating that this increase will continue, Undersecretary Öztürk said that in addition to flight and passenger safety, “passenger comfort and safety” is also important outside the aircraft. Öztürk explained that they have been aware of the problems in terms of traffic flow in the area in front of the arrivals departure terminal for a while and that the passengers are experiencing “serious unrest”, and that within the scope of the search for a solution, they have agreed to make a new arrangement within the framework of the cooperation of the Mayor of Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality Karavezirler with the Ministry.

“THERE WILL BE A SERIOUS RELIEF IN A VERY SHORT TIME”

Öztürk stated that they will carry out the traffic arrival and departure arrangement and flow here as well as on the terminal side, in cooperation with Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality and under the leadership of the Mayor, and said, “Today, we have worked with the relevant department managers and technical colleagues on how to provide a more comfortable, safe and comfortable traffic flow here and how we can minimize the complaints of the passengers. In our consultation with our Mayor, we anticipate that there will be a serious relief here in a very short time with the arrangements we will make here. For this, we want our passengers and guests using our airport to give us a chance for another 10-15 days. At the end of this period, we will have created a serious relief and a serious comfort.”

CARAVEZIRS: WE ASPIRED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH TEAMWORK

Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality Mayor Karavezirler stated that they managed to solve the traffic problem in the old terminal as a municipality and said, “As in the past, we aspired to solve the problem with teamwork together with the Ministry and all stakeholders. I would like to thank the Minister of Public Works and Transport and his entire team.”

Stating that the number of police officers working outside the arrivals terminal will be increased from 4 to 8 during peak hours of flights, Karavezirler said, “The main problem here is not the outgoing passenger, but the incoming passenger. The biggest problem is that the current posture of taxi drivers is not correct, we will start there. Here, as in the past, we will create special points for the elderly and sick. Again, we will make arrangements that will ensure the safe movement of our citizens here.” said.

“CITIZENS AND BUSES WILL USE THE PARKING LOT”

Reiterating that they will make all these arrangements together with the Ministry and airport officials, Karavezirler pointed to the parking area and said, “Currently, citizens do not use this large parking space. Citizens and buses will use the parking lot, and we will bring a new regulation to taxi drivers. Maybe in a land outside of Ercan, both Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality Centre and a centre that will provide an opportunity for taxi drivers… As in Turkey, 10 taxis will stop here and they will call the needed taxi by radio. In this way, this place will be relieved. In the short, medium and long term, I think we will bring this place to a conclusion.”

After the statements, the details of the arrangement were discussed and a meeting was held at the VIP terminal.
